Robert Indiana

Robert Indiana (1928–2018) was an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker whose bold use of text and graphic imagery helped define the Pop art movement. Born Robert Clark in New Castle, Indiana, he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and Edinburgh College of Art before settling in New York. Calling himself a people’s painter, Indiana transformed words like LOVE, HOPE, EAT, and DIE into iconic visual statements. His work has been exhibited at the Whitney, MoMA, and the Guggenheim, and his LOVE sculptures stand in cities worldwide.
