Nils Aas
Nils Sigurd Aas (1933–2004) was one of Norway's most prominent sculptors, known for works spanning delicate figurative pieces to bold abstract forms. Born in Straumen, Inderøy, he grew up in a family of carpenters and began carving wood as a teenager. After studying at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry and working alongside sculptor Arnold Haukeland, Aas won the landmark commission for the King Haakon VII statue in Oslo. He was awarded the Knight of the Order of St. Olav in 1990. His legacy lives on at the Nils Aas Kunstverksted museum in his hometown.
