Wonder Wander
Louise Nevelson (1899–1988) was a Ukrainian-born American sculptor who became one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. After immigrating to Maine as a child, she studied at the Art Students League in New York and with Hans Hofmann. Nevelson is best known for her monumental monochromatic wood assemblages — mysterious shadow boxes painted entirely in black, white, or gold. In her seventies she embraced Cor-ten steel for large outdoor sculptures. She received the National Medal of Arts in 1985.
