Lawrence Weiner

Lawrence Weiner (1942–2021) was a pioneering American conceptual artist who used language as sculptural material. Born in the Bronx, he attended Stuyvesant High School and briefly Hunter College before working on oil tankers and docks. A central figure of the Conceptual Art movement alongside Sol LeWitt and Joseph Kosuth, Weiner even designed his own typeface, Margaret Seaworthy Gothic. His honors include NEA Fellowships, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Wolfgang Hahn Prize.
