Lars Vilks

Lars Vilks (1946-2021) was a Swedish sculptor and conceptual artist who spent five decades challenging the boundaries between art, law, and public space. He began building Nimis in 1980 as a secret act of creation on the Kullaberg coast, and the decades-long legal battle that followed became part of the artwork itself. He founded the micronation of Ladonia in 1996 and remained a fierce advocate for artistic freedom throughout his life. His work is owned by Christo and Jeanne-Claude.
