Jacob Fjelde
Jacob Fjelde (1859–1896) was a Norwegian-born sculptor who immigrated to Minneapolis in 1887 and quickly became one of the city's most important public artists. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and in Rome, Fjelde brought classical European technique to distinctly American subjects. His best-known works include the Ole Bull statue in Loring Park, the Hiawatha and Minnehaha sculpture at Minnehaha Falls, and the 1st Minnesota Infantry monument at Gettysburg. He died at just 37, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of public art across Minnesota.
