Ingebrigt Vik
Ingebrigt Vik (1867–1927) was one of Norway’s greatest early twentieth-century sculptors. Born in the village of Øystese in the Hardanger region, he began as a woodcarver before training at the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen and Académie Colarossi in Paris. Known for his precise, naturalistic portrayals of the human body infused with subtle melancholy, his works earned gold medals in Munich, Budapest, and San Francisco. His bronze statue of Edvard Grieg stands in Bergen’s Byparken. He bequeathed over one hundred sculptures to Øystese, where the Ingebrigt Vik Museum opened in 1934.
