Wonder Wander
Amy Toscani is a Minnesota-based sculptor whose large scale works are informed by an arts and crafts aesthetic evocative of childhood. Amy Toscani was born in 1963 in Dayton, Ohio. She received both her Bachelor of Fine Arts and her Master of Fine Arts from Ohio University. Artist Statement My large-scale sculptures vaguely suggest recognizable objects that have a similar latent function. They have an optimistic, buoyant quality. My work also has a physical ruggedness about it. They often dwarf the viewer and yet are very approachable. The sculptures are a balance of voluptuousness and absurdity. They are self-deprecating and have intrinsic humanistic qualities. Most of my work is produced from thin sheets of steel that can be manipulated much like fabric. I employ a technique of cutting and darting that allows for a forgiving building process. The surfaces are worked with care to create a detailed, hand crafted skin. I often paint them to layer meaning, ranging from monochromatic to amusement park décor. My art is a weird mix of fantasy and 4-H.
